Letter: Crime is still linked to class

SO IN the class-ridden society of the 1930s it was 'perfectly possible for unemployed people to blame their plight on a combination of lowly birth and

impersonal economic forces' ('Jobs pay, so does crime', 10 April). Well, it is still 'perfectly possible' to do just this.

Today's society is more mobile and affluent, but a quick visit to the local magistrates court will reveal the usual trawl of low-income/unemployed males.

The social composition of the criminal population has not changed very much over the past 50 years, while those who blame themselves for their failure resort - not to crime - but to depression, despair and suicide.
