Letter: The Welsh play to win for Wales

TREVOR Haylett ('Cautious Yorath fighting shy of counting too many sheep', 6 June), falls into the trap of adopting the all- too-familiar Anglocentric attitude of patronising the Wales and Ireland football teams.

The worst aspect was the glib assumption that, should Wales be the only British team to qualify or the World Cup finals, we will somehow be able, heroically, to 'save British face'. What nonsense. This is the same school of thought that brands successful Scottish athletes, Irish boxers, etc. as 'British'. Please support us if Wales get through, but not as some kind of England surrogates.
