MARY FAGAN ('Gas turns heat on regulator over pay', 23 August) seems to have been misinformed about comments by the Ofgas director-general Sir James McKinnon at a meeting - on the record - with 30 representatives of four unions, Nalgo, Apex, ACTS and MSF. It was made clear to him at the start of his briefing that the unions' concerns were continued employment for members, their living standards, safety and service to customers. We cannot accept that the quote 'I have been consistently surprised at the low levels of percentage pay increases offered by British Gas to the workforce' was taken out of context.
