A CRUCIAL factor in explaining the growing number of graduates chasing traditionally non-graduate jobs has been overlooked by the Institute of Manpower Research ('Job Market faces graduate take-over', 11 October).
It is that many students who would not have normally chosen to stay on in post-18 education are doing so because there is no alternative. The number of jobs for
16 to 18-year-olds has fallen dramatically.
Thus one should be wary of rejoicing in the numbers staying on. It is not a positive choice but results from necessity. It is also temporarily massaging the unemployment figures.
