Letter: Knowing the speed limit for fast cats
Sir: Beatrix Campbell makes some telling points in her critique of Disney's film The Lion King ('Disney's twisted law of the jungle', 12 October), but where on earth does she get her facts that 'the lioness can run at only 80mph' (my italics) - a speed that would leave a cheetah, the fastest land animal, panting far behind - and that hyenas 'are not so speedy . . . at about 65mph'?
David Macdonald's excellent Encyclopedia of Mammals (vol 1) gives an approximate figure of 60km per hour (about 37mph) for both species.
Yours faithfully, ANDREW CABRUNOVIC London, W10 (Photograph omitted)
