Letter: Flawed siting of 'green' electricity

Sir: Nothing would induce me to pay extra for being supplied with "green" electricity (report, 5 June), as long as this would be interpreted by the wind-power industry as encouragement for further landscape despoliation of our most beautiful open countryside. Present plans are to erect 10,000 turbines - each as high as Big Ben - mainly in our prime recreational landscapes.

Such appallingly damaging siting is not entirely the wind-power industry's fault. This government has inherited a flawed renewables policy, which forces the industry into seeking such sites.

The tragedy is that we do need to develop renewables and the present clumsy market approach - which places the landscape's value at zero - is making more thoughtful solutions harder to achieve.
