Letter: Expulsion of racists

Sir: I would like to congratulate the Liberal Democrats for the only genuinely good news, so far, of this season of 'good cheer'. The rise of right-wing nationalism, and its accompanying racism, is the greatest threat to European stability, and to the future of our multi-faith and multiracial society, since the Thirties.

The Liberal Democrats' expulsion of racists from the party in Tower Hamlets shows that they are prepared to take action instead of hiding behind rhetoric. True, they took a long time getting around to it, but now that they have done it, they deserve support. I have never been a Lib-Dem supporter, but I very much hope that anti-racists in Tower Hamlets will consider voting for them next time around, just to demonstrate that taking action against racism is worthwhile.

Yours sincerely,

ANGELA PHILLIPS
