From Mr Peter Barnett

Sir: Kate Rankin might like to use a simple signal to indicate "sorry", when she is driving, that I have seen a couple of times. One hand forms the shape of a pistol (thumb up, forefinger and second finger out straight, the other two curled into the palm), which is aimed at one's own temple. Accompanied by a suitably contrite facial expression, the driver conveys "mea culpa".

The use of two fingers for the barrel is important. Using one finger can send quite the wrong message.

Kind regards,

Peter Barnett
