Letter: A capital location for a rhetorical Hell

Sir: Has Miles Kington ('An Antwerp clog - now what would Froggy say?', 30 March) not misheard or been misinformed?

The French for a wheel clamp is surely 'sabot d'enfer', the hellish clog, not the Antwerp (or Denver) clog.

It will not be the first time that Hell and the commercial capital of Belgium have been confused. It was widely believed that Churchill in 1945, replying to the acclamation of the citizens of Anvers, said 'how happy' he was to find himself, 'once again, in Hell'.

Yours faithfully,

MACKENZIE-STUART
