Skyfall beats Avatar to become UK's highest grossing film of all time - could it win Best Picture?

The latest James Bond film has taken just 40 days to beat the previous record for the highest-grossing film ever at the UK Box Office.

The record was previously held by James Cameron's 3D sci-fi adventure Avatar.

Daniel Craig’s third Bond adventure surpassed Avatar’s record of just over £94m – which it took 11 months to accumulate in 2009 – in just 40 days. It has now taken a total of £94,277,612.

Producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli issued a statement saying: "We're overwhelmed with gratitude to the cinema-going audiences in the UK who have made Skyfall the highest-grossing film of all time.

"We are very proud of this film and thank everybody, especially Daniel Craig [Bond, James Bond] and Sam Mendes [director], who have contributed to its success."

They said, putting gold bars into the safe.

There is some speculation, however, that this is just due to high ticket prices...
