Where would the world be without celebrities? You might complain about the modern obsession with them, the assumed interest in their most minute doings, such as going shopping or getting pregnant; but it would be a huge mistake to dismiss it all. For The Celebrity is the finest refinement yet of the ridiculousness which is such an entertaining part of the human condition.

There's the self-importance and self-obsession, matched only by everybody else's delight in their discomfiture; but the best of it is their desire to escape notice at any cost once notice has been achieved at any cost. As we report today, how splendidly the problems they keep having with public footpaths near their properties point this up. Verily, the perfect metaphor.

What they need is some remote place where they could all escape together. Actually, that might make rather a good television programme.
