Travel: Safety in numbers?

A MONTH ago, this column drew attention to the Virgin Territory brochure that questions the safety of flying two-engined planes across the Atlantic. Dr J Race of Oxfordshire responds by questioning the Independent Traveller's own airworthiness. The aircraft logo in the Departures column on page 34, he points out, 'has only one engine, and that one without apparent efflux'. Dr Race, a light aircraft pilot, says he believes one engine is safer than two: 'because, if you have two, you are twice as likely to have an engine failure'.
