Today...

Ryanair's new batch of summer routes takes off, including from Bristol to Reus (for Barcelona) and Edinburgh to Haugesund on the south coast of Norway ( ryanair.com ).

This week...

Handle giant hissing cockroaches or tuck into mealworm pancakes at the new BugWorld Experience, which officially opens in Liverpool on Thursday ( bugworldexperience.co.uk ). Across the Channel, female boarders will be hitting the shores of Biarritz from Friday for the annual Roxy Jam surf festival. Beyond the waves there will be music from Santigold, art exhibitions and shows, until 14 July ( roxyjam.com ).

The Festival del Sole kicks off in the Napa Valley on 18 July. An extension of the Tuscan Sun Festival in Cortona, it combines classical music concerts with food and wine, until 25 July ( festivaldelsole.com ). Further east, the sun is set to disappear temporarily. The longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century will throw a slice of Asia into darkness on 22 July. And on 26 July, Shangri-La is set to open its first resort in the Maldives.
