Storm Maya: Plane slides off runway and crashes onto highway amid weather chaos

No injuries were reported

As extreme cold weather continues to wreak havoc across the US, a small aircraft attempting to land in Indiana slid off the snowy runway and came to a stop on the highway.

The charter jet, which was carrying three people, was touching down at Richmond Municipal Airport in Indiana.

Arriving from Waukesha, Wisconsin, the aircraft slipped off the runway, through a field and stopped in the middle of Highway 227.

Jeff Lane witnessed the event and shared several pictures on social media.

He tweeted: “No injuries reported,” adding, “State police and RPD now on scene after small jet slid off runway, thri [sic] field, and across 227 at Richmond Municipal Airport.”

The plane can be seen in the photos lying at the side of the highway, with its wing sticking out into one of the lanes of the road.

Richmond airport manager Rodney Mayse told the Palladium-Item newspaper that this was the first incident to occur in the 22 years he’d worked there.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating what caused the accident.

The snow arrived as part of Storm Maya, which is currently disrupting travel plans across the US.

Pictures show Hawaii blanketed in snow at some of the lowest altitudes ever on record for the state, while schools are closed all over Washington state.

Northern New York and Michigan could receive up to 25cm of snow.

A number of airlines have said they will waive fees for changing flights scheduled in the next few days to a later date for passengers due to fly to or from nearly 40 airports across the country.

Airlines offering this option during the bad weather include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Jetblue, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines.
