Bargain of the week: the Costas

One airline will add two thousand seats a week to the flight capacity between Britain and Spain this summer. Ryanair (0871 246 0000; www.ryanair.com) is going head-to-head with easyJet (0871 244 2366; www.easyJet.com) on routes to Alicante (right) and Palma from both Luton and Liverpool. Until now, easyJet has been dominant in Spain, carrying more passengers to and from the UK than Iberia and British Airways combined.

The entrance of the Irish airline to the mainstream Spanish market raises the stakes in the battle between Europe's two biggest no-frills airlines, which compete directly on only a handful of airport-to-airport links.

Europe's third largest low-cost player, Air Berlin, also flies between Stansted and Palma.

Fares are likely to fall as a result - though for peak dates you could still pay heavily. A summer weekend to Palma from Stansted (out on 11 August, back the following day) will cost you a minimum of £150 on easyJet, £238 on Ryanair and £286 on Air Berlin.
