Road rules

For a grand American adventure, without the grand cost, travel before Easter. Trailfinders has a week's self-drive holiday of Nevada and California during March for £799pp. The price includes United Airlines flights from Heathrow to Las Vegas and back from San Francisco, car rental and three-star hotels in Las Vegas, Death Valley, Yosemite and San Francisco (trailfinders.com).

Eastern promise

On 9 March, Hayes & Jarvis has a twin-centre adventure to Malaysia for £949pp. It spends two nights in Kuala Lumpur at the Hotel Istana, then a week in Borneo at the five-star Shangri-La Rasa Ria, which is set amid a tropical nature reserve outside Kota Kinabalu with its own orang-utan centre. Flights are with Malaysia Airlines from Heathrow, with transfers but no meals included (hayesandjarvis.co.uk).

Well seasoned

Trip off to the Tuscan seaside in spring. Classic Collection has a five-star week in the resort of Viareggio, staying at the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte. The price of £699pp includes easyJet flights from Gatwick to Pisa on 5 March, private transfers and a sea-view room with breakfast (classic-collection.co.uk)

Canary comfort

The cheapest business-class fare on British Airways from Gatwick to Lanzarote is £529 return. In May and June, Wexas has a week's package with accommodation for £245 extra. The deal costs £774pp, including Club Europe BA flights, transfers and seven nights at the four-star Seaside Los Jameos Playa, on the beach at Playa de los Pocillos (wexas.com).
