Ireland dominated from start to finish to topple New Zealand 29-20 at an electric Aviva Stadium on Saturday and make it three wins from the sides’ last five meetings with another superb performance against the All Blacks.

Ireland completely controlled the first half but somehow trailed 10-5 at the break when only James Lowe could breach the superb New Zealand defence.

Codie Taylor’s try on the other hand came from one of only two visiting forays into the Irish half.

The onslaught continued in the second period and the All Blacks dam was broken, first through hooker Ronan Kelleher and then man-of-the-match Caelan Doris. A conversion and a penalty from captain Johnny Sexton put the hosts 20-10 in front.

Will Jordan’s 17th try from 11 caps set up a tense final 20 minutes but Ireland stood firm with replacement flyhalf Joey Carbery knocking over three late penalties, one from the halfway line, before the packed house erupted on the final whistle.

How about Joey Carbery’s 10-minute cameo at the end? He stepped into Johnny Sexton’s shoes and converted three late penalties to wrap the win. This one in particular was perfectly judged, and it seemed to extinguish any hope that was left from the All Blacks. The future is bright for Ireland at No 10.

James Lowe: ‘It’s a childhood dream’

“It’s amazing,” said New Zealand-born James Lowe. “Never in a million years did I think this day would come. Since a kid I dreamed of being an All Black.

“I gave up that dream, I wasn’t quite good enough, but to put up a performance against the best team in the world. To stand in front of the haka, it’s a childhood dream.”

This is quite an incredible interview with Ireland’s James Lowe, speaking to Amazon Prime:

“Never in a million years did I think this day would come. Ever since I was a kid it was my dream to be an All Black.

“I gave up that dream, I just wasn’t quite good enough and to be able to come over here and put in a performance against the best team in the world, they’re the standard bearers.

“Words can’t describe it. To hear my nation’s anthem, to stand in front of the Haka, it’s a childhood dream.”

Lowe then says his late tackle on Rieko Ioane was his moment of the match. “Forget about the try,” he says.

Ireland stun New Zealand as Joey Carbery seals thrilling Dublin victory

Ireland stunned New Zealand 29-20 in a historic victory at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

In an action-packed contest that saw both teams have tries ruled out, replacement Joey Carbery landed the decisive blow with a penalty booted from the halfway line with minutes to spare.

Caelan Doris and Ronan Kelleher had put the hosts ahead with impressive scores before Will Jordan responded for the All Blacks.

And Akira Ioane thought he had pulled the visitors to the brink of taking the lead with a try, only for the officials to save the Irish.

An expectant home crowd then roared their team on in the closing stages and a penalty was greeted with an almighty cheer with less than 90 seconds remaining.

And Carbery made no mistake to clinch a sensational win to kickstart the party as Andy Farrell’s men march on.

What a stunning victory for Ireland - only their third over the All Blacks in 33 attempts. They were sensational throughout the match, and in a devastating 15-minute spell at the start of the second half were able rack up the points their overall display deserved. It could have been even more, too, if not for some magnificent New Zealand defending.

The All Blacks made it a tight finish with two quick scores late on, but Ireland were able to make the crucial turnovers down the stretch to seal another famous win.
