On the eve of another season, approaching his 20th anniversary in charge of Arsenal, Arsene Wenger is more optimistic than ever about his next title challenge. Arsenal have not won the league for 12 years, but Wenger still speaks like a man whose vindication is just around the corner.

Arsenal play Liverpool on Sunday afternoon and will be without their three best centre-backs, their two best midfielders and their two best strikers. They have signed just one senior player this summer, Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka.

And yet at his press conference on Friday morning Wenger was relaxed and confident. He believes that, having finished second last season, Arsenal have a better chance than ever of winning the title back.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic does make it three! Seconds after nearly opening his Premier League account, the Swede does just that and celebrates with unbridled joy along the touchline. Taking control of possession 30 yards from goal, the United forward burst forward and struck a low shot away from Artur Boruc into the bottom left corner. The striker will have hit thousands of better attempts over the years, but few will have produced such a sweet result. Zlatan has arrived!

A fine strike from Adam Smith gives the home side something to cheer! Lewis Grabban had only been on the pitch a matter of seconds, but the former Norwich forward managed to dig out a pass to his teammate on the edge of the box, and the defender rifled a left-footed effort high into the top right corner of David de Gea's goal. Will it be little more than a consolation or can the Cherries mount an epic opening weekend comeback?

4 mins: A first corner of the game is won by Arsenal's Nacho Monreal, whose burst and subsequent cross down the left is diverted behind. From the resulting dead ball, Liverpool's Dejan Lovren heads clear, signposting his involvement for the first time this afternoon. Suddenly I'm wondering what all the concern about Arsenal's defence was about.

Monreal found Alex Iwobi in the penalty box, where the 20-year-old proceed to pick out Aaron Ramsey with an excellent short pass. The angle was against the Welshman, but a sharp shot with the outside of his right foot forced Simon Mignolet into making the save.

Wow! That is classic Philippe Coutinho! On the stroke of half-time, Liverpool are level out of the blue. Rob Holding was harshly adjudged to have impeded Coutinho 30 yards from goal, but the Brazilian had no sympathy as he stepped up and curled a sumptuous effort over the wall straight into the top left corner of Petr Cech's goal. Simply unsaveable. Simply brilliant.
