Manchester United will face West Ham United at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup quarter final - the second meeting in four days after the 1-1 draw in the Premier League on Sunday.

United, who have won the competition on four occasions, most recently in 2010, will be without manager Jose Mourinho, who has won it three times himself, for the game after he was sent to the stands for angrily kicking a water bottle when Paul Pogba was judged to have dived towards the end of the first half.

  • Jose Mourinho to watch the game from the stands as part of a one-game ban
  • Bastian Schweinsteiger expected to make his first appearance of the season for United
  • Four of the last six meetings between the sides have ended in draws

Welcome to The Independent’s live coverage of Wednesday night’s EFL Cup quarter final ties as Manchester United take on West Ham United and Arsenal welcome Southampton to the Emirates.

United and West Ham will be facing off for the second time in four days after the two sides shared a 1-1 draw in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands during that game after reacting angrily when world-record buy Paul Pogba was judged to have dived towards the end of the first half.

The United boss kicked a water bottle in frustration and will consequently be banned from the touchline tonight after accepting the FA charge against him and receiving a one-match ban as well as a £16,000 fine.

West Ham will be without Diafra Sakho for the game after he was ruled of for six weeks with the thigh injury he suffered on the weekend.

In the 7.45pm kick off, Arsenal will likely field a much-changed side to the one that edged past Bournemouth on the weekend, with Arsene Wenger tipped to play a number of his younger player as he always does in this competition.

A young side as expected from Arsenal for their game with Southampton, but that is a strong XI Jose Mourinho has named for United!

Pogba and Fellaini are suspended but that is as close to full strength as you can get - with a couple of exceptions. Martial is given a chance to redeem himself, while Rooney also starts. Mkhitaryan fans will be pleased too...
