Donald Trump joins Democrats calling to ban terror suspects from buying guns

Another rift between the GOP nominee and Congressional Republicans

Donald Trump sides with the one gun control measure the majority of Americans can agree on.

In the wake of the worst mass shooting in US history, Democrats are pushing to renew previously failed legislation that bans people from legally purchasing guns who are on terror watch lists and no fly lists. Now, the presumptive Republican nominee announced his support for the legislation on Wednesday.

“I will be meeting with the NRA, who has endorsed me, about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, House Democrats called on Congress to vote on the “No Fly, No Buy” legislation to prevent suspected terrorists from purchasing guns.

Joseph Crowley, a Democrat from New York, laughed at the possibility that Trump could convince the NRA to finally support the legislation. “It’s just one more disagreement Congressional Republicans will have with Trump,” he said. “Its remarkable how much power the NRA has over the Republican Caucus.”

Xavier Becerra, House Democratic Caucus Chairman, said that it's time for more action than a moment of silence.

“It’s been a do-nothing congress when it comes to the issue of gun legislation,” Becerra said. “Between 2000-2014, 2000 terror suspects legally purchased guns in the US.”
