White van narrowly misses boy as it jumps red light

A teenager narrowly avoided death as a van sped through a red light while he crossed the road.

Dash cam footage shows the 14-year-old boy walking over the pedestrian crossing when a Ford Tipper van passes within a hair’s breadth.

The van can be seen swerving around the pedestrian as it jumps the set of red lights in Ewell, Surrey.

Surrey Police used the dash-cam footage to track down the driver, Ian Gruber.

Gruber was found guilty of dangerous driving after a trial at Guildford Magistrates Court.

The 39-year-old was given a six week sentence, suspended for 18 months and 80 hours community service.

He was also disqualified from driving for 15 months with an extended test and received prosecution costs of £230.

“This incident is a sharp reminder of what can happen if you are caught driving dangerously,” PC Keiron Palmer said.

“Fortunately the 14 year old was not hit, but things could have worked out very differently.

“This incident also demonstrates the important part dash cam footage can play in bringing about a successful prosecution.”
