A police officer has suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car that failed to stop at the scene.

The officer was knocked down after intervening in a domestic incident between a man and woman in Walsall in the West Midlands.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “A woman police officer was struck by a car and sustained serious injuries. She is being treated in hospital.

“The car was recovered shortly after in Bloxwich and investigations are ongoing to trace the offender.”

The collision, which took place at 9am on Thursday, came a day after an off-duty police officer was stabbed in an attempted car-jacking in the town.

Chief Superintendent Andy Parsons said: “This was a despicable act of violence against an officer who was trying to protect a member of the community.

“I think the public will agree that officers who are working to keep others safe from harm should not be subjected to this level of violence.”

Anyone with any information is urged to contact West Midlands Police on 101 or via live-chat on the force’s website between 8am and 9pm.
