Man and woman arrested on suspicion of murder after Christmas Day fire

A man and woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder by police investigating the death of a 60-year-old man in a fire on Christmas Day.

The 27-year-old man and the 32-year-old woman have been taken to an east London police station for questioning.

Police were called to a house fire in Field Road, east London, on Christmas Day, where a 60-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Four people escaped from the fire.

A post-mortem examination suggested the cause of death was burns and inhalation of fumes.

Police are treating the death as "suspicious" and officers believe "the fire was started deliberately".

Detective Chief Inspector Steve McCabe said: "We need to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in Field Road and the surrounding area in the early hours of Christmas Day."
