Doctors treating two Asian men who suffered horrific head and facial injuries in a racist attack fear one of the victims could be left with impaired vision.

The men, aged 20 and 25, from Loughborough, Leicestershire, were assaulted by a gang of men armed with bottles in Birmingham city centre early on Saturday, police said.

The victims were said to be comfortable in hospital, but detectives said the younger man's sight in one eye might be damaged.

"Hospital staff are very concerned about the condition of one of his eyes, but we cannot give any more details," said a spokeswoman for West Midlands Police.

The two men had been enjoying a night out in the Broad Street area of Birmingham before the incident at 3am.

A gang of up to five white men approached the friends as they joined a queue at a mobile takeaway outside the Rocket Club – the former Ronnie Scott's jazz club.

The two left the queue and were followed into nearby Granville Street, where the assault took place.

Detectives investigating the incident believe the offenders' clothing might have been stained with blood and are appealing for witnesses.
