The second largest teaching union, NASUWT, restated its opposition this week to teachers taking children on school trips, telling the Education Select Committee that parents had become "increasingly litigious" and no longer understood the idea of a genuine accident.

The second largest teaching union, NASUWT, restated its opposition this week to teachers taking children on school trips, telling the Education Select Committee that parents had become "increasingly litigious" and no longer understood the idea of a genuine accident. However, refusing to take school trips is not the answer. Millions of children - particularly the poorest - could miss out on vital educational experiences if teachers no longer ran trips. Heads and local authorities need to recognise this and do more to promote school visits and to support teachers so that they are happy to take children on outings.
