Education: Oddly Enough

Don't mention the war: A maths teacher in the Dutch town of Enschede was reprimanded after making a Nazi salute in front of his class and shouting "Sieg Heil" several times. The incident occurred when students were asked to raise their arms to demonstrate a right angle at the elbow. The teacher later apologised, saying: "It just happened."

Boredom threshold: A former law student failed in his attempt to sue Duquesne University in America, claiming that the only reason he failed his exams was that the school had failed to accommodate his disability. The student claimed that if he sat for long periods of time, his arms and fingers became numb.

Creative journalism: A former Columbia University student has been sentenced to 15 months in prison after pleading guilty to using the photocopier at the University's journalism school to forge $20 bills.

Triumph for chessplayer: Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela, 59, received a diploma for passing his high-school equivalency degree at a small ceremony held in the maximum security wing of La Picota jail in Bogot, Colombia.

Mr Orejuela, also known as "The Chessplayer", is chief of the Cali drug cartel, and is serving a 10-year term. Having already earned remission, he is unsure whether he will remain in jail long enough to complete a higher degree.
