Under a fiver: 2003 Tesco Finest South African Chenin Blanc Reserve, £4.99, Tesco

Ken Forrester, one of South Africa's leading exponents of chenin blanc, has produced a powerfully flavoured, almost off-dry Cape white with fresh pear and pineapple-like flavours in the style of a Vouvray from the Loire Valley. The ideal wine for white fish in creamy sauces and lightly spicy Asian food.

Under a tenner: 2003 Stella Bella Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc, £7.99, Waitrose

This delightfully scented Western Australian sauvignon from the talented Janice McDonald shows the assertive, capsicum-like aromas more normally associated with New Zealand. A crisp, citrusy aftertaste of intense gooseberry, grapefruit and tropical fruit chimes with shellfish and other seafood.

Splash out: 2001 Saintsbury Carneros Pinot Noir, £15.29, Majestic (reduced on special offer by £2.50)

Sainsbury's top-notch, sumptuously fruity pinot noir, has justifiably become a popular classic. The 2001, one of the best so far, is a perfumed, voluptuous red with juicy red berry fruit flavours and poised oak spiciness. The fine 2002 Reserve Pinot has £4.50 lopped off it, bringing it down to £22.94.
