Matt K. Lewis has written a rather superb piece for The Week, which summarises how some people feel about Twitter.

He describes the social medium as “like high school, where the mean kids say something hurtful to boost their self-esteem and to see if others will laugh and join in”.

With 10 million users just in the UK, Twitter is a hot bed for journo activity, and a hive for heated discussion.

Everyone has a voice, but sometimes that voice can become rather unpleasant.

Trends facilitate finding out exactly what people are getting excited about - just as much as they indicate exactly what - and who - others are feeling irate towards, leaving countless people at the centre of Twitter storms.

Ultimately, Lewis' point is this:

“What was once an inspiring place that gave you a competitive advantage became a prison.”
