DVD: The Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter (15)

A documentary on the Rolling Stones' 1969 free concert at Altamont Speedway, Gimme Shelter is a startling exposé of the clash of sub-cultures which characterised the music of the period.

With the Stones reduced to spectators in a coming together of the Hells Angels, who were working security, and the free-loving Hippies, Mick Jagger exhorts his attendees to "sit down" and try to enjoy the show. Most moving is the footage of the Stones watching back the tapes of the day's events, with Jagger protesting that he missed much of the worst violence, just as the stabbing of Meredith Hunter, who was attacked after drawing a gun, is replayed in slow motion.
