Julia Leigh's murky, deeply creepy Sydney-based tale centres on Emily Browning's hard-up student, Lucy, and the lengths she will go to make money: photocopying, waitressing and prostitution.

To make extra cash she signs up for a "lingerie silver service" for wealthy, dirty old goats, but she's warned that there's a "very heavy penalty for any breaches of indiscretion". Soon, the brothel's madam "promotes" Lucy to a "sleeping beauty", which involves her being drugged to sleep while the pervs are allowed to do what they please – apart from penetration – with her.

This unsettling film's pessimistic look at modern life lingers long in the mind.
