A founding father of the French New Wave, Rohmer's canon of moral tales, filmed between 1962 and 1972, asks questions of ethics, religion and philosophy in relation to matters of the heart.

His intensely realist style of film-making is slightly at odds with dialogue that sometimes feels as if it has come from the mouth of a Nietszche or Stendhal, but this is a master at work, spinning quandaries and unravelling spurious vindications of actions with practised artfulness.
