Avengers: Endgame writers explain key decision behind final battle scene
A lot of thought went into the Infinity Gauntlet moment
The writers of Avengers: Endgame have explained the reasons behind the choreography of the film’s climactic fight scene.
The 2019 blockbuster concluded with an epic face-off between an army lead by Josh Brolin’s arch-villain Thanos and a multitude of Avengers.
During the battle, the Infinity Gauntlet – the powerful tool used to wield the power of the Infinity Stones – is thrown from character to character, as the heroes try to transfer it to Luis’s van in order to send the stones back in time.
The gauntlet is seen passing through the hands of several heroes in an elaborate sequence which spotlights characters including Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and Gamora (Zoe Saldana).
In a interview with Slash Film that has recently resurfaced, Endgame‘s writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus explained why those specific heroes were chosen to be the focus of the sequence.
With the exception of Hawkeye, most of the heroes who feature prominently in the “gauntlet run” scene were absent from the bulk of the movie, they explained.
Captain Marvel spent the majority of the film in space, while Spider-Man, Black Panther and many others had been “willed” out of existence at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.
“You’ll notice that most of the people doing the heavy lifting in that sequence are not the ones you’ve spent two hours with,” said McFeely. ”It’s the ones who just got there, because it’s the only time they’re going to get any screen time.”
Markus added: “It was a great opportunity to advance the plot, but also give everybody a beat.”
A fan theory recently suggested that Thanos could return in a future Avengers film, based on a detail contained in one of Endgame's deleted scenes.
