'Portraits will pop' with new bokeh effect, according to Samsung

Samsung's new flagship smartphone – presumably called the Galaxy S10 – will come with a brand new camera feature that borrows a classic effect usually found in traditional DSLR cameras, according to a new leak.

The next-generation smartphone is expected to be unveiled in early 2019 but various leaks mean many details are already known about the device.

Three different size variants of the Galaxy S10 are likely to be launched – the Galaxy S10 Lite, the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+ – with each potentially coming with different camera set ups.

A new trademark for something dubbed Artistic Live Focus suggests that at least one of these variants will come with this feature.

The camera feature enables a bokeh blur on images – a visual effect usually created by the camera lens that blurs certain parts of the image.

The leaked trademark application, which comes courtesy of Dutch website Galaxy Club, reveals that the effect is created using software rather than the physical camera lens.

The trademark describes how the Artistic Live Focus is designed for "creating digital animation and special effects of images."

Other smartphone manufacturers have introduced features that create a bokeh-like effect, including Apple, Google and Huawei – all of which create the effect using software.

Samsung has also included a similar effect in the Galaxy S9+, which Samsung described as being able to make portraits "pop when you bring faces to the front."

It is anticipated the latest feature will bring far more enhanced control when applying the bokeh effect.

Other rumours surrounding the Galaxy S10 suggest at least one of the variants will be an all-screen device.

In order to avoid using a notch design at the top of the screen, several leaks suggest it will make use of a hole-punch design to house the front-facing camera and sensors.

The screen itself may even be self-healing, thanks to a protective material that helps prevent scratches.

Samsung is expected to reveal the new phone ahead of the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona, with the release data anticipated for 8 March, 2019.
