Facebook is still suffering significant problems after an outage knocked it entirely offline overnight.

Major pages – including those run by news organisations such as The Independent – are unable to post links on its page. They were also hit by problems that saw a flurry of posts automatically arrive on their followers’ news feeds.

That means that everyone's Facebook will look a little different this morning. It follows a complete outage overnight, which saw users unable to access Facebook and Instagram.

Video posts do seem to be working, as well as posts from normal profiles. That means people's news feeds will still be full – just without news articles and other links posted by the pages they follow.

As well as The Independent, publishers including the Guardian and Huffington Post are thought to be affected by the problem. Facebook representatives have confirmed they are investigating the problems and hope to have it fixed as soon as possible.

The company said last night that the initial issues had been fixed. "Earlier today, a technical issue caused some people to have trouble connecting to Facebook and Instagram," it said. "We resolved this issue for everyone, and we apologise for any inconvenience."
