History: Opened in 1966 as two separate Catholic teacher training colleges, Trinity for women and All Saints for men, which subsequently merged and expanded the range of degree provision. Leeds Trinity University was granted full university status in December 2012.

Address: Attractive 40-acre residential campus in the popular suburb of Horsforth, six miles from Leeds city centre.

Ambience: Supportive and welcoming, with a good community atmosphere, accessible staff and support services.

Who's the boss? Professor Margaret House, who joined from Middlesex University in January 2013.

What you need to know

Easy to get into? Most honours degrees ask for between 240 and 260 UCAS tariff points but the average entrant has 297.

Vital statistics: Over 3,200 students. Undergraduate courses include media and marketing, journalism, business and marketing, early years and educational studies, humanities, and English and history. It was one of the first universities to offer courses in forensic psychology and sports journalism.

Added value: Close links with industries and an emphasis on gaining practical experience, including professional work placements. In fact, it was the first university to offer professional work placements with every degree, and these still form an integral, assessed part of every degree. A 3G Astroturf Pitch opened in 2012 in addition to the £2m sports centre that opened in 2007. Purpose-built media centre housing TV production, editing and sound recording gear has undergone a major refit recently, with upgrades including a fully-fitted suite of Apple Mac computers. The university is investing millions of pounds into providing new facilities. These include a new learning and teaching building. Planned for development by 2016, it will include increased library facilities, modern teaching spaces, and a social space with a café. Following on from the 2010 development of All Saints Court, the university’s newest halls of residence (which were nominated for a building excellence award) are expected to open in 2016. The residence will feature 250 ensuite bedrooms, Wi-Fi and self-catering facilities.

Teaching: 17th out of 126 for student satisfaction with teaching quality in the Complete University Guide.

Graduate prospects: 65th out of 126 with 65.1 per cent finding graduate level employment.

Any accommodation? Self-catering accommodation ranges from £88 to £113 per week while part-catered options cost £107 or £115, depending on whether your room is en-suite. Fees are based on a 39-week contract for three year courses and a 46-week one for two year fast-tracks.

Cheap to live there? Leeds is very reasonable. Student properties in Horsforth are around £58, Headingly and Burley between £66 and £73, and the more luxury larger city centre properties start at around £155 per week.

Transport links: Leeds is just over two hours from London by train and there is a local station at Horsforth. There's easy access to the A1, M1 and M62. Buses to Leeds and Bradford serve the campus. Leeds Bradford airport is only two miles from campus.

Fees: Home and EU 2014/15 entrants on three year courses will be charged £8,500 per year. Two year courses cost £9,000 per year.

Bursaries: All honours undergraduate degree programmes offer an award of £2,500 tuition fee reduction in the first year for all students with a household income of £25,000 or less. See here for more information.

The fun stuff

Nightlife: The students' union has a bar and organises discos, live music and comedy events as well as trips to social events off campus. Close to the popular student haunts of Headingley.

Price of a pint: £2.40 on average in Leeds but head to the union for the best value bevvies.

Sporting reputation: Not the sportiest- 124th out of 145 universities and colleges in the BUCS 2014/15 league.

Notable societies: Only a small range, including dance, film and creative writing. Scope to set up your own though. A fair few sports clubs including Eagles basketball club and Lions cricket.
