The Week in Review

FEW will remember who won the Imola Grand Prix. Most will remember the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna. They were the first Formula One fatalities for 12 years. Ratzenberger was killed in practice while Senna died leading the race. Brazil mourned for the three-times world champion.

Declan Murphy, fighting for his life after being kicked by his mount Arcot at Haydock Park on Monday, thankfully recovered quickly. A blood clot was surgically removed on Monday but by Thursday he had regained consciousness and there was talk of him returning to the saddle.

Wigan, after a season that brought them the major rugby league prizes again - a fifth successive championship and a seventh successive Challenge Cup - parted company with their coach John Dorahy. A move without precedent was left less than fully explained.

Jimmy White could do with that sort of failure. He lost his sixth world snooker final in the last frame, 18-17, to Stephen Hendry, fractured arm and all. It was Hendry's fourth championship and his third in a row.

Manchester United again won the Premier League without being on the field. Blackburn's loss at Coventry gave them the title with a record number of points.

In the European Cup-Winners' Cup final Arsenal scored early through Alan Smith and held off Parma for the rest of the game.
