Pete Sampras yesterday pulled out of German Open, which takes place here next week, adding to speculation that he will skip his first French Open in 13 years. The Roland Garros event, the only Grand Slam Sampras has not won, starts on 26 May in Paris.

The American former world No 1 gave no reason for his withdrawal, according to the tournament director at the German Open, Walter Knapper.

Sampras has not played on tour since the US Open in September, when he won a record 14th Grand Slam singles title. He missed the Australian Open in January and has entered several tournaments this year only to withdraw.

Sampras requested and was granted a wild card for the Stella Artois tournament at Queen's club in June, and it is thought he may make his farewell to the game at Wimbledon.

Sampras has lost in the French Open first or second round since 1998. His best result was reaching the semi-finals in 1996.
