Goran Ivanisevic has won the Wimbledon title after a classic five-set match against Pat Rafter that finished 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 2-6, 9-7

The Croatian - who only made it into the tournament on a wild card - won the final set 9-7 to lift the trophy for the first time in his fourth final.

It looked as if Rafter would win the match after he twice broke Ivanisevic to win the fourth set 6-2, but he regrouped to finally edge out the Australian in a tense final set, despite twice double-faulting on match points.

Eventually Rafter sent a service return into the net, leaving a tearful Ivanisevic to finally win a Grand Slam.
