We may have seen a future British Davis Cup doubles partnership in the making on Saturday, when a pair of 18-year-olds, Lee Childs, from Somerset, and Newcastle's James Nelson, won the US Open junior title, writes John Roberts.

Seeded No 1, Childs and Nelson defeated the American pair of Tre Davis and Robby Ginepri, 6-2, 6-4, in the final. It was Britain's first-ever success in a junior event at the US Open, and the Duchess of Gloucester, President of the Lawn Tennis Association, was among a small group of spectators on Court No 7.

Nelson also reached the third round of the junior singles, where he lost to Andy Roddick, the American top seed, who went on to beat Ginepri in yesterday's final.

The pair have been partners since they were 14-year-olds training at Bisham Abbey, and have also won the European Under-18 championship, where Childs also won the singles title. "We'll definitely play doubles together as seniors," Nelson said, "but obviously we'll concentrate more on singles."

They may well have bright futures on the singles tour but it is in the doubles where they will surely make their mark.
