Baltacha on the march
Elena Baltacha kept alive British interest in the women's singles in the Powder Byrne Trophy at Surbiton with another impressive victory yesterday. The 17-year-old defeated the Argentinian Clarisa Fernandez 6-4, 7-5 in straight sets to claim a place in the quarter-finals.
However, there was disappointment for Louise Latimer, the defending champion and British No 1, who went out to Japan's Rika Fujiwara despite twice serving for the match. Lorna Woodroffe, the national champion, lost in straight sets to Janet Lee, of Taiwan.
In the men's singles, the British No 3, Martin Lee, also went out in the first round in straight sets, leaving just Arvind Parmar and Jamie Delgado as the lone Britons in the last 16.
