It’s a big tournament for…

Andy Murray: Can Britain’s new world number one cement his place at the top of the rankings and win the tournament for the first time? Murray comes into the back of the Finals in phenomenal form, having won titles in Paris, Vienna, Shanghai and Beijing after winning Wimbledon and Olympic Gold in an outstanding summer. However he has never won the World Tour finals, and after his remarkable recent successes, he is favourite to win on home soil.

Only one of the eight players who have qualified for this year’s tournament has ever even reached the final, let alone won the tournament, with Novak Djokovic having won every one of the five finals he has played to date. Murray has been knocked out in the semi-finals on three occasions, in 2008, 2010 and 2012, while Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal failed to qualify for this year’s event. The last time the Swiss did not qualify for the season-ending event was in 2001.

Remember when…

Two years ago, Andy Murray was thrashed 6-0 6-1 by Roger Federer in a group-stage match to end the Briton’s involvement. The humiliation lasted just 56 minutes and Federer was in fact 6-0 5-0 up before Murray managed to win a game. There is no chance of history repeating itself however, as the Swiss 35-year-old’s injury-hit season denied him a place amongst the top 8.

Player to watch…

Novak Djokovic: The Serbian has produced some disappointing performances since winning his maiden French Open crown in May and has now been usurped as world number one by home favourite Andy Murray. However, Djokovic has won this tournament for the last four years and is looking to equal Federer’s record of six wins overall – can he win for the fifth year in a row and put a halt to Murray’s incredible run of form?

Jamie Murray is also looking to win the Tour Finals for the first time in the doubles, competing this year with Brazilian Bruno Soares. The 30-year-old has won this year’s Australian Open and US Open with his partner and they go into the tournament ranked second, behind only the French pairing of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut. Murray has only ever taken part in the Finals once, going out in the round robin stage in 2015 with American partner John Peers.
