One of the reasons that last year's men's competition at National Championships was boycotted by Britain's leading professionals was low prize-money. This year all the leading players, including eight ranked in the world's top 20, are playing at the Championships, staged for the first time at the Herts Country Club. A pounds 15,000 prize fund is offered, with the men's champion winning pounds 1,800 and the women's pounds 1,300. The second round in the men's and women's championships starts today at noon. The quarter-finals begin at noon tomorrow, with the first semi-final at 1.45 on Sunday. The women's final is on Monday evening and the men's the following day.

How to get there: Herts Country Club, Welwyn Garden City, is two miles from A1(M). Tickets (per session): today pounds 5, tomorrow pounds 7.50, Sunday pounds 10, Women's final (Monday, 7.15) pounds 12.50. Rovers tickets pounds 5. Play from the quarter-finals onwards will be televised and relayed to the club lounge. The men's final on Tuesday and Sunday's evening session have sold out. (Tel: 0707-331333).
