Jorge Valdano, the Real Madrid coach who was banned from the touchline for a month and fined dollars 5,300 (pounds 3,500) for fielding four foreign players instead of three in a recent Spanish league match, has had his suspension lifted and fine reduced to dollars 800 on appeal.

Fans of Milan, who went out of the Italian Cup on Wednesday, threw projectiles on to the visiting goalkeeper, Internazionale's Gianluca Pagliuca, Italy's World Cup keeper. The incident came on the same day that their appeal against a Champions' League two-point penalty over a bottle throwing incident was turned down.
