FORMER champion jockey Steve Cauthen has been overshadowed by the title duel between Michael Roberts and Pat Eddery so far this season but showed he is in form for the big Goodwood meeting by riding four winners at Newcastle yesterday.

Cauthen began the sequence with 1-7 newcomer Azhar in the opening race, followed by Waseela (3-1), Wrets (6-4) and Citiqueen (5-6).

But the American could finish only second in the track's most valuable race of the day, the Group 3 Federation Brewery Stakes. His mount Sure Sharp was five lengths behind Casteddu, with the favourite Toussaud a head back in third. Ridden by Ray Cochrane, Casteddu wore blinkers for the first time.

'It was not until Sunday we decided to let Casteddu run in blinkers,' Pip Payne, the colt's trainer, said. 'He'd come back a fresh horse in his last two races and we thought they'd make him concentrate.' Portico, for the Vincent O'Brien and Lester Piggott partnership, finished 14 lengths back in fifth.
