Reading are to start work on their pounds 37m all-seat stadium after being granted planning permission. The Royals plan to start the 1998-99 season at their new 25,000 capacity home close to the M4 motorway.

Gary Peters, the manager of Preston, will have at least pounds 1m available to recruit new players after a pounds 3.7m cash boost from a group of the club's major investors. The remaining money will go towards the building of a new 6,000-seat stand at the ground.
