Motor Racing: Williams serve writ on chief designer Adrian Newey
The Formula One team Williams have served a writ on their chief designer, Adrian Newey, in a dispute over the terms of his contract. The world constructors' champions said in a prepared statement that Newey was "currently on leave" and the dispute was "an internal matter".
Six years after he severed his arm in a helicopter crash, Italian driver Alessandro Nannini made an emotional return to Formula One yesterday in Estoril, Portugal. Nannini, who was invited to drive a Benetton by his old team manager, Flavio Briatore, completed a special test in impressive style. Nannini's best lap was 1min 24.28sec, which compared favourably with the times set in qualifying for this year's Portuguese Grand Prix. There is no chance, however, of Nannini returning to Formula One because his arm is not strong enough to withstand the rigours of a full grand prix race.
