The British touring car champion John Cleland and his partner Mark Skaife finished seventh in a Commodore behind Craig Lowndes of Australia and the New Zealander Greg Murphy in Australia's premier touring car event, the Bathurst 1000, yesterday.

Soames Langton, the British driver, was airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries on Saturday after his Porsche crashed in the ninth and penultimate round of the world endurance championship at Nogaro, France. Officials said yesterday Langton, 28, was unconscious in intensive care in a hospital in Mont-de-Marsan.
