Le Tissier tables his England agenda

Matthew Le Tissier has told Terry Venables, the England manager: "I've got nothing left to prove to you." The Southampton player, axed from the England squad which struggled against Uruguay, broke his silence for the first time since his omission.

"My reaction is no different to any other player who has been in the previous England squad and is not in the next one," he said. "I am very determined to get back in, but I've been given no promises. He [Venables] rang me before the squad was announced and basically said: `I'm leaving you out of the squad this time and I wanted to ring you before you read it on Teletext'.''

Leeds have denied claims that their Ghanaian striker, Tony Yeboah, would be returning to the German side, Eintracht Frankfurt, at the end of the season. The sacking of the Frankfurt coach, Jupp Heynckes, whose row with the striker led to Yeboah's departure, has heightened speculation in the German media that Yeboah will go back to the Bundesliga side.

Bernd Hlzenbein, the Frankfurt vice-president, said Yeboah would be returning from Leeds at the end of what, he claimed, was a loan period. However, the Leeds secretary, Nigel Pleasants, made it clear that Yeboah had signed a permanent £3.4m deal.

"As far as we are concerned, Yeboah is our player and will remain our player," Pleasants said. "He has given every indication that he wants to stay at Leeds."

The struggling Second Division side, Cambridge United, yesterday sacked Gary Johnson as manager, and placed the former West Ham player, Tommy Taylor, in temporary charge.

Manchester City's utility player, Paul Lake, has suffered a further set- back in his battle against a long-term knee injury. The 26-year-old, whose career has been on hold since he suffered cruciate-ligament damage in a match against Aston Villa in 1990, was forced to pull out of a reserve- team game at the weekend, and will have minor surgery today.
