Hockey: England draw with world champions

England twice came from behind in a hard-fought 2-2 draw yesterday against the World Champions, Holland, writes Brian Tatlock in Monchengladbach. It gave them their first point in their second game in a Four Nations Tournament. After an impressive opening, England's defence opened wide to allow the unmarked 18-year-old Teun de Nooijer to slip in and score in the 31st minute. In the sixth minute of the second half, Phil McGuire, diving in at the far post, touched home Rob Thompson's long free-hit to put England on terms. But 12 minutes later the England defence was split for a second time and Jacques Brinkman gave the goalkeeper Simon Mason no chance. Having defended two more Dutch corners, England bounced back, converting a fourth penalty corner with a hard drag by Russell Garcia with just two minutes remaining for the equaliser. England's manager David Whittle was delighted with the fightback but disappointed with the careless passing.
