Hockey: Crutchley called up
BOBBY CRUTCHLEY, Cannock's 28-year-old-striker, is the surprise choice in the England squad announced yesterday for June's elite Champions' Trophy event in Brisbane. The jury has been out on Crutchley on occasions but he scores highly for his club and has just finished top National League goalscorer for the fourth successive year. Perhaps he should play his club goal-poaching role for England.
There is also a return for East Grinstead's Stuart Head, who suffered a hand injury playing against Reading in January and was expected to be out of action for months. Bournville's 21-year-old medical student Tom Bertram seems to have got the nod over the Reading defender Andy Barnes. The Brisbane squad may be that which goes to Italy later in the year for the European Cup, with the possible exception that Army doctor Guy Fordham could come in.
